The construction sector is a traditionally male-dominated industry, but a growing number of women are breaking down barriers and making their mark, one of those being Matilda Beckett, Apprentice Multi Skilled Operative for Sovini Property Services.
Matilda began her career at The Sovini Group after enrolling on the Pathway into Construction work experience programme, which aims to encourage female students to consider a career in the construction industry.
The Pathway into Construction initiative had a positive and lasting impact on Matilda, who went on to secure an apprenticeship with Group partner Sovini Property Services.
“I thought it would be different and I wanted to try something new. If any women are considering doing an apprenticeship course or trying a trade, go for it!”
Matilda is excelling in her role and was recently presented with the Above & Beyond Call of Duty Award at The Sovini Group Apprentice Awards 2024.
Colleagues praised her as “an absolute delight to work with,” commenting that she is “passionate about the work that she does.”
Despite some challenges for females in the industry, women like Matilda are breaking down barriers every day by taking on diverse roles across the construction trade.
“I have a fantastic team around me and great mentors who make me feel more confident in my ability each day. If a boy can do it, a girl can! You just have to have the confidence and you’ll fit in.” said Matilda.
