The Brunswick Youth and Community Centre, known as “The Brunny,” was founded by Lieutenant Colonel James Dunhill during the Second World War. After seeing the effects of the war on his fellow soldiers, and realising how it would have affected boys at home, he launched The Brunswick Boys Club in 1947.

His goal was to give boys purpose and belonging, combatting the hopelessness and boredom that affected many throughout this time.

Since then, The Brunny has expanded to offer a wide range of activities for the local community, including:

  • Baby sensory classes, offering a safe and welcoming space for new parents
  • A juniors club, offering young people fun activities and sustainable initiatives
  • A seniors club, providing sports and art alongside targeted youth work
  • Support for veterans, providing inclusion and support for those who have stood for us

These initiatives allow people of all ages to feel supported, heard and inspired. Community resilience has always been the heart of The Brunny, and managers have made significant efforts to promote this across their operations.

The community centre has been instrumental in bringing Bootle together, helping to tackle issues like poverty, education, health and wellbeing and social isolation.

Our Partnership

The Group has proudly partnered with The Brunswick Youth and Community Centre for over fifteen years, sharing a core belief: the power of community.

Like us, The Brunny shares a high standard for community initiatives and treatment. Through donations made by the Group, the Brunswick has commissioned their all-electric vans, improved their kitchen facilities and created a purpose-built sports hall for users to enjoy.

They also share our commitment to sustainability, installing solar panels across the building and growing their own fruit and vegetables to feed the community, and create their famous ‘Brunny Jam.’

Our ongoing partnership enables us to positively impact the communities we serve, and we are proud to support the Brunny in whatever way we can.
